A millennia-old town
The town of Sens is the product of a history spanning several millennia. Strolling through its streets evokes a journey through the ages. Sens was inhabited very early on by the Senones. This Gaulish people lived in what are now the departments of Yonne and Seine-et-Marne, and their main towns today are Melun and Sens. Although traces of Celtic occupation are no longer visible in the town, apart from the town hall, adorned with a gilded Gaul, the subsoil remains rich in ancient treasures. Rich in a fascinating history dating back to Antiquity, Sens offers a unique setting where past and present harmoniously meet.
Gaulish and Roman heritage
In Gallic times, Sens was known as Agedincum and served as the capital of the powerful Senones people. The Senones left their mark on history by invading Italy and seizing Rome in 390 BC. After the Roman conquest, Sens became an important administrative centre, benefiting from its strategic position between the Seine and the Loire.
Medieval heritage
Sens is home to the first Gothic cathedral in France, an architectural gem that reflects the town's importance in the Middle Ages. Saint-Étienne Cathedral, built in the XIIth century, is a symbol of the architectural innovation of its time and attracts many visitors each year. The historic centre of Sens, with its cobbled lanes and half-timbered houses, offers an authentic glimpse of medieval life.
Religious and political role
In the Middle Ages, Sens was a major religious centre. The Archbishops of Sens wielded great influence, notably in the coronation of sovereigns and in diplomatic relations between the Pope and the Frankish monarchy. The town also hosted numerous synods and important political events, reinforcing its status as a religious metropolis.
Historic remains
The town retains many traces of its past, such as the Gallo-Roman ramparts, half-timbered houses and former episcopal palaces. These historic witnesses invite visitors and residents to explore the rich and complex history of Sens, offering a fascinating journey through time.
In the heart of the city centre
