Historic capital of Auvergne close to the chain of mountains of the Puys, it now has 145.000 inhabitants, including 40 000 students, or a quarter of the municipal population, and 6 000 researchers: it is the first city in France to join the UNESCO learning city network. A city with an industrial tradition, home to one of the world's two largest tyre manufacturers, Clermont-Ferrand is also well positioned in the pharmaceutical, food-processing and aeronautics industries and now forms one of the three balancing hubs of the AUVERGNE-RHONE-ALPES region.
