At the confluence of Provence, Languedoc, the Cévennes and the Camargue, Nîmes enjoys a privileged location in the heart of southern France, only about fifty kilometres from the Mediterranean. Nicknamed the “French Rome”, this two-thousand-year-old city offers exceptional monuments. Its arena, as well as the Maison Carrée and the Tour Magne, bear witness to this rich Roman past.
Nîmes has also been awarded the Town of Art and History label and, since 2012, has been working on its application to be inscribed on the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage List. The city also has a contemporary face, notably the Museum of Romanity designed by Elizabeth de Portzamparc and the Carré d’Art Jean Bousquet commissioned from Norman Foster. With its bullfighting tradition, its férias and its bull races, the city attracts more than two million visitors a year.
